Ed painting

Born in Montana, Edmond is the fourth of ten children and is an enrolled member of the Little Shell Tribe. His mother, Anna, is Chippewa and his father is Cree from Sweet Grass Reservation in Saskatchewan, Canada. Edmond spent his childhood on Hill 57 in a village outside of Great Falls, where the people were referred to as “Landless Indians.” He currently resides in Great Falls with his wife Sonja and their rescue animals.

Edmond originally planned to make his career in the forest service and after many years as a firefighter in Montana he felt compelled to return to school. As a self taught artist Edmond pursued his life long dream of becoming a professional artist and in 1987, he enrolled at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas in an art class and rediscovered his natural ability, earning a B.A. in Art.

Over the years he honed his talent by drawing images from master prints and early photographs of North American Indians. Edmond has works in collections throughout the United States, many pieces appearing at the C.M. Russell Museum Auction and several well known galleries in Santa-Fe New Mexico. Ed has entered and won numerous Best of Show and People’s Choice awards at the Great Falls Native American Art Shows. He has worked in pencil, charcoal, pastels, pointillism, etchings and oils. Many of Edmond’s compositions are of the ceremonial dancers he meets while traveling with Sonja attending Pow Wows thoughout the West. He is moved by the expressive faces and elaborate costumes of the various tribes. He has a passion which shows in the capturing of the beauty of the Native American spirit, with the blending of old world and contemporary/traditional Native American dance recalling a time of bygone artistry.
